Framing effective feedback for clients
Using an effective feedback cycle or process

Aims of effective feedback

  • To promote heightened self awareness
  •  Build skills and ideas
  •  Modify limiting behaviours
  •  Enable productive action
  •  Enhance self confidence, esteem and well being

The Feedback Cycle

1. Observe
2. Impact
3. Shared insights
4. Suggestions/Options
5. Open questions to consolidate.

For example:

1. Observation and reflection on what you are hearing, seeing and sensing as a coach

“Reflecting on what you were saying……”

“I have a sense that you………”

2. Statements of effect or impact on coach and possibly others

“It had this effect on me…..”

“I noticed that….”

“What you have just said makes me feel….”

3. Sharing insights about the consequences of a behaviour or action

“I was wondering about the impact …”

“What seemed to be happening there was…”

4. Suggestions for action – providing some concrete and actionable suggestions to inform alternatives for a client

“One option might be to …..”

“I have an idea let’s see what you think of it ...”

5. Asking open questions to help a client move forward and take action

“What would that course of action give you?”

“What sort of resources can you call on to help achieve that action?”

“Who might be able to help you with this…?”
