An important aspect of an effective and enabling coaching relationship is the level or state of rapport established with a client.

How can coaches move from basic rapport to extraordinary rapport in the interests of their clients?

Research suggests a way of considering different levels of rapport and examines the outcomes of each level or state in terms of achieving high value transformation for the client

The model assumes that at the lowest level there is establishment of basic social politeness as client and coach get to know each other.

The next level can be defined as process based rapport where the client sees the coach as an expert and can buy into any techniques being used or ideas being shared.

A zone of greater transformation for the client occurs if and when complete trust for the coach evolves and this is labelled as expertise based rapport.



A fully engaged transformational rapport emerges when client and coach engage in a skilled joint winning performance.
