The Prochaska and DiClemente model
WHEEL OF CHANGE ( and see STAGES OF CHANGE)
James Prochaska and Carlo DiClemente have developed a model that investigates how people make changes . The insights provided may be of use in some instances for life coaching
The model ilustrates stages that people may go through:
STAGE 1 - Contemplation - early stages of realisation for the client where people can see the benefits of changing and also not changing
Coaching : Reflect on different options for change and potential outcomes, consider a series of small but achievable changes that the client can really commit to
STAGE 2 - Decision - A decision is made to change often after some defining event providing greater motivation for change
Coaching : Articulate and write down the change in terms of achievable goals , consider what support is needed and how it can be mobilised
STAGE 3- Action - The person now starts to act ranging from complete, rapid or dramatic change to a slow process of incremental change
Coaching: Review the plan together , extract learning, celebrate successes, remind the client of the short, medium and long term benefits , help pace so that motivation stays high, consider any new support needed
STAGE 4 - Maintenance- If things are going well from the persons perception they maintain progress
Consolidation - The change has been secured and incorporated into behaviours . Sometimes before this stage is reached their may be a lapse
STAGE 5 - Lapse - the person lapses into previous behaviour or patterns
Stages 1 to 5 are shown as a cycle which people may go through again and again before they can fuly consolidate
Coaching: Maintain and review plans until they achieve goals , if any lapses occur revisit and adjust the plan from where the lapse happened and learn from the lapse. Can the client now help others based on the learning and development achieved from their experience?
