NLP - The difference that makes a difference

Evolution

NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970's as they studied the approaches used by outstanding therapists who achieved excellent results with clients.

They discovered processes which they developed into a model to help enhance effective communication, personal change and personal development

Approach

Neuro Linguistic Programming theory, concepts and practice is concerned with three main areas:

Neurology – The mind and how we think based on our beliefs and values using our senses

Linguistics – How we use and translate language and the impact this has on us and others

Programming – How we develop, sequence and manage our actions to achieve our goals and which produce expected and unexpected outcome

What does this mean for coaching?

This holistic viewpoint can provide valuable insights to help clients in all fields of coaching.

NLP features some key ways of understanding and explaining our actions and along with other approaches and ideas can be used to help clients become more self aware and take some steps in their own interests thus promoting growing self reliance

Basic principles of excellence

  • We all have the resources we need
  • The meaning of communication is the effect it has
  • There is no failure, only feedback
  • The map is not the territoty;every persons map is unique

Well formed outcomes

  • Positive
  • Specific
  • Evidence
  • Ownership
  • Fit
  • Resources

Beliefs

In NLP beliefs are assumptions made about ourselves, others and how we expect things to be . These beliefs influence our behaviour and decision making approach. They are often based on emotions and pur world view rather than facts. To some extent ehat you believe is what you get often explained as a self fulfilling prophecy.

Beliefs that serve you and others well can be perceived as EMPOWERING and those that are restrictive can be seen as LIMITING.

For any belief consider:

  • Is this an empowering belief or a limiting belief?
  • Where has it come from?
  • What was the positive intention behind it?
  • How might you want to change it?
